Flax seed is probably best known for its high fiber content, but I first heard about its potent cancer-fighting lignans when reading up on the famous Dr. Budwig’s Cancer Diet.

She recommends combining flax seed oil with quark (or cottage cheese, which is more readily available in the US). I couldn’t find either here, but after researching flax seed a bit more, I was impressed also by how researchers uncovered its power in the ground form when they added freshly ground flax seed meal to the diets of  prostrate cancer patients already scheduled for surgery. The men all experienced a slower rate of growth of their tumors. That’s pretty convincing! (more…)

Cinnamon is a great way to improve the flavor of countless dishes and happens to be one of my favorite spices. I came across this great article,  “Cinnamon is a Wonder Spice for Health and Well-Being” and posted it as a page (click on the title to read it.) It explains about the virtues of cinnamon, a spice which my husband and I add fairly generously to our weekly oatmeal. As much as we would love to have it more often, we only eat oatmeal weekly because it’s so expensive here in Vietnam. Cinnamon, on the other hand, is quite cheap. It is locally grown and is especially known in Asia for its warming qualities and is often used to provide relief when faced with the onset of a cold or flu, especially when mixed in a tea with some fresh ginger. I had a little time while our Internet connection was pretty good and WordPress allowed me reasonable access to my dashboard and tools, so I posted 2 more chapters of my cancer journey. This included more correspondence between my friend L. and I (Chapter 7, More Letters to and from L) and my decision regarding surgery (Chapter 8, To Cut or Not to Cut–And How Deep?). Read all the chapters of my cancer journey in my book-style compilation of earlier blogs by clicking here: Choosing Cancer–My Story.

It’s such a battle to publish my pages as it seems WordPress doesn’t allow much band width to its free blog users! I was finally able to get 2 more chapters added to my “book” I called “Choosing Cancer–My Story”. So, I now have 6 chapters, all taken from my previously published posts. See above and click on the tab or find it in the column on the right of the blog roll. Enjoy!

A Race to Keep Up With the Tightwads,  100-Year-Old Athlete Still Plays to Win and Mediterranean Diet Prevents Macular Degeneration are three new articles posted as pages under the categories “Articles on Other Topics” and “Interesting Health Articles from Others”. Please check them out.

I feel happy when I can share with others the interesting articles I come across on the web. The ones I’ve chosen are  informative and mostly positive and faith boosting. Being positive is an important part of staying healthy, right along with making wise decisions about the care and upkeep of your body and having faith in the Creator that He knows what’s best, loves you completely and will never leave you.

Taking action to apply the knowledge we gain is equally important, though probably the hardest part of improving the quality of our lives. (more…)

Accepting responsibility for choices starts with understanding where our choices lie. This idea is wonderfully framed by the timeless wisdom of the ancient Serenity Prayer:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

I’ve started arranging my earlier posts about my cancer story, book-style under its own heading. (See above.) Where I originally posted 5 posts in my blog under the general heading of The C-word, I now have them grouped together as chapter 1. Hopefully, I’ll get the whole story up there sooner or later. I hope and pray my story is a help in some way to those who read it.

I’ve just added a page with an interesting article by Michael Moore entitled “Goodbye, GM“. He’s got an interesting proposal for salvaging jobs and moving the whole country closer to actually contributing to a happier planet. Check it out by clicking on the link here.
