It’s the Sugar, Folks

(This is a re-print of an article from the New York Times. Although it does’t mention the connection between sugar and cancer, it ends with this: “We finally have the proof we need for a verdict: sugar is toxic.” Could it be more clear?)

Sugar is indeed toxic. It may not be the only problem with the Standard American Diet, but it’s fast becoming clear that it’s the major one.

A study published in the Feb. 27 issue of the journal PLoS One links increased consumption of sugar with increased rates of diabetes by examining the data on sugar availability and the rate of diabetes in 175 countries over the past decade. And after accounting for many other factors, the researchers found that increased sugar in a population’s food supply was linked to higher diabetes rates independent of rates of obesity.

In other words, according to this study, obesity doesn’t cause diabetes: sugar does.

I was working on some photos for posting on our charity projects website, when my husband alerted me to the article below which is another reaction to the study (reported in “Nature”, a top research journal) referred to in the previous post on this site. The article I included on Feb. 2  is titled: A little sugar  ’is not a problem, but a lot kills – slowly’  . The results of the study led the scientists to propose some practical measures that would help us as a society to wean ourselves from this destructive addiction. In their words, their suggestions are “gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose.”

Let’s at least consider it. Of course, those who make money from high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other sweetening agents will not only vehemently object, but do all they can to sabotage such a course of action, but we’re at a point of crisis and “in my humble opinion” some control needs to be exerted over those who care not for anything but profits.

This is a very long article from NY Times Magazine, but well worth reading if you’d like to understand Gary Taubes’ connection between sugar and cancer. I, personally, am a believer–as you would already know if you’ve read even a few of my posts. In my personal battle against breast cancer, I read and researched the topic endlessly to try to understand the cause of my cancer, as I didn’t fit the typical picture of most cancer victims: I wasn’t overweight, (more…)

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)–Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a breast cancer conference said Thursday, renewing debate on a sensitive topic.

While better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed the disease, experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity. The comments added to a series of findings that lifestyle changes in areas such as smoking, eating, exercise and sun exposure can have a significant effect on all sorts of cancer rates. (more…)

I knew it! Finally I see it in black and white: In the article below, Dr. Maoshing Ni gives more evidence that sugar is a major culprit in the development of breast cancer: ” Another study discovered that rats fed a high-sugar diet had a substantially elevated rate of breast cancer when compared to rats on a regular diet.
I have felt so much healthier since I kicked the sugar habit! It isn’t exactly a subtle difference, but of course eliminating sugar wasn’t the only change I made, so I haven’t followed the usual scientific method in making this claim, but there’s a lot of evidence pointing to sugar as a major factor in the development of many health problems, including cancer. It’s hard to believe that I’m writing about sugar again, after several earlier posts and more-or-less promising I’d leave the subject alone. I suspected that many of you were tired of hearing about it. But I was happy to read 2 more confirmation recently that there are still plenty of people out there who firmly believe that sugar (especially large amounts of it) is to be avoided if one wants to stay healthy.

As I mentioned before, I have a voracious sweet tooth when I indulge it, and I did indulge it when I was young. However, I cut back considerably during most of my adult years, but until quite recently could still easily binge when temptation overtook me. Apparently, according to my herbal doctor, it took its toll on my body in more ways than one. (more…)

I was so very glad to hear from you again, as I was afraid that what I said in my previous e-mail might have been too overwhelming.

I think you have a wonderful attitude and it sounds like you are on your way to beginning this new diet and lifestyle.

To try to answer some of your questions: (1) Yes, I think beans can cause some gas problems. I think it helps if you soak the beans for 24 hours before you cook them. Also, I think your body gradually gets used to it. You can experiment with different beans as they may have different effects on you. I think lentils may be the easiest to digest.
