Yep! I’m harping on this same old theme again! I still believe my sweet tooth got me into my breast cancer troubles, although the article I’ve included below doesn’t specifically mention cancer. The delightful sweet taste we enjoy when we consume healthy amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables can be perverted by internal and external triggers. If we indulge those desires, i.e. by allowing our sweet tooth to have its way, we can destabilize an otherwise perfectly balanced system. The lack of fiber (which slows down digestion) in soft drinks, fruit drinks & juices, canned fruits, (more…)

I was so happy to hear from you today.  I have been thinking about you and wondering how your diet and lifestyle changes were going.  I think you are right that you have “majored on the majors”.  That is really huge and I think you shouldn’t worry too much about the cooked vs. raw vegetable ratio.  I think the critical thing is eating the “right” vegetables.  I am so intrigued by your description of the bean mixture you take.  It sounds like a wonderful idea; you get all the benefits of the beans without the gas.  I think there is much to be learned from traditional cultures and Western medicine is so blind to it. Dear L,

It’s hard to believe that it’s been another 2 1/2 months since I last wrote. Lots has happened since then, including moving house! Our previous landlady got greedy and wanted more rent money, then, when she realized we were not willing to pay more than before and we would therefore be moving, she begged us to stay at the same price, long contract, blah, blah, blah. But we’d already found a better place, so we moved. The new place is bigger and better for the same price. So, that’s done now, but there are still things to do to get fully set up, so we’ve been busy.

How are you and yours? We’re all fine. Of course the cancer is still a concern and affects my meals most of all, (more…)

Flax Seed’s Power Over Cancer June 23, 2009

Flax seed is probably best known for its high fiber content, but I first heard about its potent cancer-fighting lignans when reading up on the famous Dr. Budwig’s Cancer Diet.

She recommends combining flax seed oil with quark (or cottage cheese, which is more readily available in the US). I couldn’t find either here, but after researching flax seed a bit more, I was impressed also by how researchers uncovered its power in the ground form when they added freshly ground flax seed meal to the diets of  prostrate cancer patients already scheduled for surgery. The men all experienced a slower rate of growth of their tumors. That’s pretty convincing! (more…)

(An earlier post had the same title, but that one is now changed. It was actually a response to a message I sent to all my family and friends. This is a reply to my fourth letter to her personally.)

Hi _____________,

I think it is absolutely right to use the diet now to grab any stray cancer cells and keep your immune system strong.  It is great that J. is interested in trying the same diet–it makes it so much easier when you have that kind of support.

Yes, I think it is best not to drink near meals.  I think D. drank juices three times a day or so, and at least one of those juices had kale and some kind of green power (like kyogreen or spirulina) in it.

I think you probably have to eat potatoes to help you keep from losing weight. (more…)

Check out a great article from the Mayo Clinic called: “Beans and other legumes: Types and tasty tips”. Beans are cheap and nutritious and can be served many different ways. They’re great for providing protein for a vegetarian (or just shoestring-budget) diet. I’ve got lots more vegetarian tips coming. Stay tuned!

One of the first get-togethers I had shortly after arriving in my hometown was a lunch with family friends I’d know since childhood. Our 3 families had grown up together and lost loved ones together over a period of about 50 years. Some had stayed in the area and others had moved far away, so it was more like a reunion as we tried to catch up in the short time we had together.
That’s not remarkable in itself, but the topic turned to cancer and (more…)
